Procedure
Durham Technical Community College (Durham Tech) employs a letter grading system to evaluate students’ performance in meeting stated instructional objectives. Due to COVID-19, the College has established a temporary grade of Withdrawal-Emergency (WE). The WE grade will be assigned in cases where students are not able to continue in a course due to extenuating circumstances related to COVID-19. Examples of extenuating circumstances include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Student illness;
- Illness of someone the student provides care for;
- Financial hardship; and
- Lack of appropriate technology.
Please Note: Students’ financial aid eligibility will not be impacted by WE grades.
WE Grade Assignments
Admissions, Registration, and Records will administratively assign the WE grade under the following circumstances:
- A student submits an official withdrawal form via the eForms system and indicates the reason is related to COVID-19;
- A faculty member submits an official withdrawal form for a student and indicates the reason is related to COVID-19;
- A faculty member submits an official withdrawal for a student with a Last Date of Attendance (LDA) noted between March 1, 2020 and May 9, 2020; or
- A faculty member submits the grade of F2 for a student with a Last Date of Attendance (LDA) between March 1, 2020 and May 9, 2020.
A student may request that the WE grade be assigned in circumstances outside those outlined above. The request must be made in writing to the Registrar at registrar@durhamtech.edu before May 12, 2020, which is the designated due date for Spring 2020 grade submission. The request must include documentation illustrating that the withdrawal is clearly related to COVID-19. The Registrar will review the request and make a final determination. Students will not have an opportunity to appeal the decision.
Only Admissions, Registration, and Records can officially record the WE grade.
