During an emergency, professionals such as emergency medical technicians, or EMTs, and paramedics are among the first to respond.

Their responsibilities include assessing injuries, administering emergency medical care, extricating trapped individuals, and transporting injured and sick persons to medical facilities. They may administer medication intravenously, use equipment such as EKGs, or administer advanced life support to sick or injured individuals.

The Emergency Medical Science curriculum at Durham Tech trains students to become paramedics with a credit, Associate Degree program and a Continuing Education option. Students acquire basic and advanced life support knowledge and skills through classroom instruction, practical lab sessions, hospital clinical experience, and field internships with emergency medical service agencies.
