#DoGreatThings #durhamtech #durham #durhamnc #orangecountyncCongratulations to Chief Jamaal Walker, head of Durham Tech's Police and Public Safety, on his recent completion of N.C. State's highly regarded Law Enforcement Executive Program. 👏
According to N.C. #DoGreatThings #greatworkgreatpeopleBlack History Month has a special resonance this year after our recent 40th anniversary Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Celebration at Durham Tech. At the Jan. 17 event, Dean David Long reminded us that Durham Tech started its MLK Day a full two years before the nation would officially celebrate the national holiday – and 16 years before the last state would make it a state holiday.
❤️ Being out in front on MLK Day was nothing new for Durham Tech. When the College started in September 1961, we had a racially integrated board of trustees and student body. This was just a year-and-a half after the February 1, 1960 Woolworth sit-ins in Greensboro and years before the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act. This community and this college were not waiting, they were acting.
💛 During Black History Month this year, we will be running stories from our 60 for 60 series (from our 60th anniversary year) each week to celebrate Durham Tech moments and achievements that have added to our local, state and national historical record.
💚 We will start by sharing the story of our founding board and the context of economic change and racial conflict in which they were working to launch the College.

Duke HealthChef Betty Redwood-Brown, Durham Tech culinary arts instructor, is spearheading a new partnership between the College and the Orange Correctional Center in Hillsborough in which she is teaching inmates cooking skills.
There was a wide range of knowledge among her students. Some didn’t know how to make stock or soup, but wanted to learn skills so they could take better care of their families when they are released. Three students had food businesses, though, and Redwood-Brown said her goal was to help them enhance their skills for their businesses.
Redwood-Brown said she can see the impact she’s having on her students. Her recent graduates wrote her a thank you note, addressing it to Chef Betty, aka Mom.
“It’s all about making a difference in someone else’s life,” she said. “At the end of the day, we’re all trying to reach one goal- to make it better.”

#DoGreatThings #durhamtech #Durham #durhamnc #orangecountync #stemeducation #stem[ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT] Felicity “Fizzy” Little is a graduate of the Paralegal program at Durham Tech. A single mom, her son was only 15 months old when she started the program, and she sometimes had to bring him to class with her. “My teachers and peers were supportive, even helping to watch him while I studied,” Little said.
She was the recipient of a life-changing single-parent scholarship at Durham Tech.
“With the scholarship in place, I was able to get daycare for my son. I could then accept internships,” Little said. “I slowly dug myself out of that tough place single parents often find themselves.”
Years later, Little is now employed with New Direction Family Law in Raleigh as a firm administrator and operations manager.
She and her son, now a teenager, took a drive through Durham Tech’s campus less than a month ago. “I remember that struggling, single mom who just wanted a career she would love and one that would provide for her family. The award, presented by Vontier, honors individuals or organizations that “live fierce” for themselves, their loved ones and their community and that are catalysts for longer, healthier lives for people.
Johnson-Arnold said she happily and proudly shares her award with all community health workers.
“I want to thank them for all the great work they have done and are doing in the community. Community health workers are the boots on the ground. They impact lives. Their time and energy make a difference. They are needed,” she said.
Congratulations, Letitia! Keep doing great things.

Cybersecurity Tip of the Week - Making 25 copies of your house key is probably overkill. Using the same password 25 times is also a bad idea. Use passwords that are strong, long, unique, and random for each site or account. That is the best way to keep your accounts secure.

State, the six-month program explored ideas and techniques of public management as they apply to police agencies; sharpened the personal skills necessary to excel as police managers; and allowed participants to step outside daily activities and responsibilities to think creatively about the job of managing a law enforcement agency. #DoGreatThings[NEWS] As part of a relationship with The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and its Center for Slavic, Eurasian and East European Studies, Durham Tech now offers a Ukrainian language course.
This partnership was natural because the two institutions have worked together previously. Durham Tech is now the first learning institution in the region to offer such a course.
