Get pampered at Durham Tech, 3 self-care clinics now open to the public

Durham Tech is now a one-stop shop for hair, skincare, and massage therapy needs.

On February 11, the Duke Street North Campus opened its doors to the new Cosmetology Clinic, which is 100% staffed by students and open to the public. The clinic joins the Esthetician Spa, which opened 10 years ago, and the Massage Therapy clinic, that began last year.

“It feels amazing to have all three clinics now up and running. This has been something we dreamed about for so long, and it’s finally here,” said Maria Steele, Director of the Cosmetology program.

The benefit of public clinics is two-fold: Students gain hands-on experience while patrons receive specialty services at heavily reduced prices.

“The clinics give students an opportunity to learn how to give quality customer service, how to talk to clients about what service they want, and talk to them after the service to see how their experience was and what they could do better,” Steele said. “The main focus is to give students an idea of what the real world will be like servicing clients.”

Mawi Golden, a 24-year-old Durham Tech student, was inspired to pursue Massage Therapy to help her mom, who suffers from chronic migraines.

“I like helping people de-stress, and giving massages comes very natural to me,” Golden said. “The clinic helps build my confidence because I can practice new techniques we learn and prepares me for the future.”

Current Durham Tech students and employees can receive most services at no cost, while the public receives services at heavily reduced costs. For example, a 50-minute, full body massage is $15; a 60-minute facial is $20; and a haircut is $6. Next semester, cosmetology students will learn nail care, which will later be added to the clinic.
