Durham Tech’s Paralegal Technology program receives transformational gift

Made possible by the bequest of the late Beulah T. Latta, the Paralegal Technology program has received a transformational gift that includes scholarships for students, a law simulation lab, and funding to upfit classroom space into a mock courtroom. This represents the single largest commitment the program has received in its history. The scholarships will enable the program to actively recruit new students and support current students. The addition of a law simulation lab and a mock courtroom elevates the program’s commitment and ability to deliver experiential learning experiences.

The Paralegal Technology program at Durham Technical Community College offers an immersive and comprehensive curriculum designed to equip students with the practical skills and legal knowledge necessary to thrive in the field of law. With a focus on hands-on learning, the program integrates classroom instruction with real-world case studies, simulations and internships, providing students with valuable experiential learning opportunities. Attorney Precious Vines Harris is director of the program, which uses experienced legal professionals and educators to deliver course instruction and learning experiences. The program is committed to fostering a supportive learning environment in which students can develop critical thinking, research and communication skills essential for success in the legal profession.

Throughout the program, students delve into various aspects of law, including Civil Litigation, Criminal Law, Family Law, and Legal Research and Writing. They learn how to draft legal documents, conduct legal research using electronic databases, and assist attorneys in preparing for trials and hearings. Additionally, Durham Tech’s program emphasizes the importance of ethics and professionalism in the legal field, ensuring that graduates are not only proficient in their technical abilities but also uphold the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct. Upon completion of the program, students emerge as competent and confident paralegals ready to make meaningful contributions to law firms, government agencies, and corporate legal departments.

Students may apply now for the Latta Scholarship for the 2024-2025 academic year. Each scholarship award is $2,000 for tuition, fees and books. The criteria students should meet are:
•    Be enrolled in the Paralegal Technology program OR the Associate in Arts degree in Creative and Liberal Arts with the intent to transfer and continue legal studies
•    Have completed six credit hours prior to applying; be enrolled in six more credit hours for academic year 2024-2025.
•    Preference will be given to applicants who identify as female, are a veteran or dependent of a veteran, are single parents, or a first-generation college student
