Durham Tech names Dr. Susan Bowen, longtime community college and university leader, as new Chief Campus Operations Officer
Durham Technical Community College announced Tuesday the hiring of Dr. Susan Bowen, Associate Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer at the University of Scranton, as the incoming Vice President and Chief Campus Operations Officer.
Dr. Bowen, a career higher education administrator with more than three decades of leadership in K-12, community college, and university settings, will start March 1. The Chief Campus Operations Officer leads the College’s Information Technology, Facility Services, and Campus Police and Public Safety divisions.
Retiring Vice President Patrick Hines has held the new position since its inception in Spring 2021. The position was created as part of a larger leadership restructuring to align the College with its strategic goals and priorities for student success and regional impact.
Bowen joins Durham Tech at a pivotal moment for the College and her new division. The College is working with both the Durham and Orange Boards of County Commissioners on plans to update and install new technology in existing campus buildings and build innovative learning spaces on campus for new and expanding programs. In addition, she will manage departments supporting the College’s technology infrastructure and playing a key role in building safe communities and neighborhoods. Prior to joining The University of Scranton in 2016, Bowen served as Interim Vice President for Administration and Chief Business Officer at Mercer County Community College and Executive Director of Information Technology Services. She has also served as Chief Information Officer at Camden County College, and The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey.
Bowen received her Higher Education Management Doctoral degree from the University of Pennsylvania. She holds a Master of Arts in Business and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the College of New Jersey. Bowen has also completed the Institute of Educational Management at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education and the Executive Leadership Institute at the League of Innovation.
“Susan Bowen brings outstanding experience and a record of impact to Durham Tech,” said President JB Buxton. “We looked across the country for someone who could fill this new leadership role and are fortunate to have found Susan Bowen to join the Durham Tech team."
