Durham Tech to co-host NC Teaching & Learning Hub for regional community college training

Learning hubs partnersDurham Technical Community College will serve as a regional community college teaching and learning center dedicated to training and developing instructors and improving student success.

In September 2021, The Belk Center at NC State, Achieving the Dream, and the North Carolina Student Success Center – three non-profit organizations dedicated to providing support and resources for community college leadership – launched the North Carolina Teaching & Learning Hubs.

The hubs will provide institutional support for faculty to develop evidence-based practices that are essential to student success and credential completion. Full-time and part-time faculty and staff educators will have the opportunity to participate in virtual, in-person, and hybrid workshops and seminars that lead to more equitable student outcomes.

Durham Tech will join Central Carolina Community College in housing the initiative for the Central region.

Marye Vance, the Durham Tech co-director for the hub, said she will assist in the planning, coordinating, contextualizing, presenting, and evaluating of professional learning activities.

“In collaboration with the Belk Center, Achieving the Dream, and Central Carolina Piedmont Community College, the Central Teaching & Learning Hub will enhance the center's goals of institutional excellence and student success in the one college framework for professional learning. Through this enhanced partnership and support, we will be leading the work in the Central portion of the State with affiliates assisting and contextualizing professional learning offerings from colleagues across the state of North Carolina,” said Vance.

Vance said she is excited to continue the work of professional development at the College for employees and that the Teaching-Learning Center strives to provide professional learning and development for all employees that align with the College’s strategic plan.

The idea of centralized development hubs stems from a 2018 lecture delivered by Dr. Karen Stout, President and CEO of Achieving the Dream. The lecture, titled ‘The Urgent Case: Centering Teaching and Learning in the Next Generation of Community College Redesign,’ kickstarted a national push for Teaching & Learning Hubs.
