Chris Mansfield named new Dean of Science and Mathematics
Durham Technical Community College announced last week that Chris Mansfield has been chosen as the new Dean of Science and Mathematics.
Mansfield began his role at Durham Tech in 2003 as a Math instructor and was promoted to Chair of the Mathematics, Engineering, and Physics department in 2012.
Mansfield has co-chaired the team responsible for implementing Guided Career Pathways for the science and mathematics division; coordinated assessment for the science and math and the creative and liberal arts divisions; created and headed the NCMATYC Math Competition, an annual event that brings together students from two-year colleges across the southeastern U.S. for a one-day math competition; and served on the NC Community College System Curriculum Improvement Committee and in that role developed the curriculum for the system’s new quantitative literacy course.
“I am honored to have been named Dean of Science and Math and am excited to get started on the important work the position entails. I am passionate about the work that community colleges do and am looking forward the opportunity to make a greater impact on the college community and further benefit our students,” Mansfield said.
With more than 19 years of experience at the College, he has demonstrated that he is a phenomenal leader that will continue to support faculty, implement new initiatives, and champion student success.
Prior to his role at Durham Tech, Mansfield worked at New Century Charter High School.
Mansfield said one of his major roles will be to facilitate the great work of the fantastic faculty in continuing to implement equitable, student-centered, and rigorous instruction.
“I am also keen to engage with our BioTech and Life Sciences Initiatives such as Bio-RTP and BULLS as well as build upon our relationships with STEM areas at local universities, all of which initiatives will contribute to giving our students more opportunities for academic and professional success.”
Mansfield holds a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Philosophy from the University of North Carolina, and a Master of Science in Mathematics from North Carolina State University.
