Short Term

Automotive Continuing Education courses include Automotive Safety Inspection, On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) II Automotive Emissions, and Vehicle Escort Driver Certification.

Automotive Safety Inspection and On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) II Automotive Emissions are offered for experienced mechanics and other trained technicians and requires that students have basic knowledge of vehicle systems.

Classes are held in Newton (Building 4), Room 4-162. Make sure to park in Lot H.

View Driving Directions(link is external) or the Campus Map.

Option 1: Register Yourself and Pay Online

  1. Go to Self-Service.

  2. Enter DMV in the Course Code Number box (the second form field), and click SUBMIT. All Automotive courses will display.

  3. Select the checkbox for the section you wish to register for and click SUBMIT.

  4. Complete the information requested.

  5. The student and their employer will need to complete the most recent version of the LT-310 Mechanic Application form(link is external). It must be signed by the employer and the student. The employer signature indicates their employee has general knowledge of motor vehicles.

    • At the top, place an “X” next to “Add Employer.” You should also place an “X” next to “New or Renewal.” If working at additional employer stations, enter the station in the top right section.

    • The Mechanic’s Information section must be completed and signed by the technician.

    • The Employer Information section must be completed and signed by an official of the station.

    • Upon successful completion of the class Durham Tech is required by the DMV to mail/submit the latest revision of the original, completed LT-310 form.

Option 2: Register Your Employee

If you are paying for someone else, such as an employer paying on behalf of an employee:

  1. Online Enrollment is not an option with Sponsorship billing. The letter must have an authorizing signature.

  2. Go to Self-Service. Enter DMV in the Course Code Number box (the second form field), and click SUBMIT. All Automotive (Continuing Education) courses will display. Choose one with open seats.

  3. Email the Continuing Education Registration Form and the Sponsorship Billing Template to registration@durhamtech.edu(link sends email). Forms should be submitted at least 5 days prior to the start date of the course. No payment should be sent until an invoice is received from Accounts Receivable at Durham Tech.

  4. You will receive a confirmation email within 48 hours. If not, please reach out to 919-536-7200, ext. 1800. Sponsors/Employers are responsible for giving the course information to their employees.

  5. Registration will email the Sponsor upon receipt of completed forms within 48 hours indicating student/s, class section/date, registration status. Please reach out to Registration if needed: 919-536-7200, ext.1800.

  6. The Sponsor is then responsible for notifying their employees of the course information they have been registered for. This will be DMV-3129A-___(section#) Safety and/or DMV-3129B OBD-___(section#) OBD.

  7. Before the student comes to the class they are registered for, the employer needs to complete and give to their employee a current LT-310 Mechanic Application form(link is external). It must be signed by the employer and the student. The employer signature indicates their employee has general knowledge of motor vehicles. If not signed by employer, this will cause a delay to the DMV.

If you have multiple employees, you can indicate all in the Sponsorship Billing Letter, but each student must complete the Continuing Education Registration Form. The student will then be registered and the Sponsorship Billing Letter forwarded to Accounts Receivable for processing.

If withdrawing a Sponsorship, it is your responsibility to notify the college immediately in writing to registration@durhamtech.edu(link sends email) before class starts to prevent an invoice being sent. In the event that a transfer is required, a new Sponsorship Billing Letter must be submitted prior to the class starting.
