Wynn, Audiobooks, and Attenborough: Celebrate Earth Month with the Durham Tech Library

Submitted by Durham Tech Library on

Cicada emergence, pollen counts, and blooming plants everywhere! Spring is certainly here this Earth Month.

Earth Day, celebrated annually on April 22, and Earth Month allow us--as humans--to focus attention to the environment around us and our role in protecting, preserving, and being good members of our ecosystems.

While the Durham Tech Library has lots of resources to learn more about many aspects of Earth Month, the Phail Wynn Collection allows us to mindfully collect books and other resources on topics that "pertain... to socially responsible topics, such as ecology and the environment, cultural awareness, global citizenship, teaching tolerance, appreciating diversity, fighting poverty, and promoting world peace." Endowed from the estate of Phail Wynn Jr., who served as president of Durham Tech for nearly 30 years, this annual financial gift allows the library to collect resources and provides funding for our book club and reading circle texts.

The Phail Wynn Collection of circulating books can be found upstairs at the Main Campus Library.

The Library enthusiastically recommends All We Can Save and Braiding Sweetgrass for anyone wishing to set up a reading group focused on environmental advocacy and literacy.

Dogwood Digital Library, the NC Community College shared audiobook and ebook library available through your computer, phone or, (our recommendation) your Libby app (as an additional library to your local public library!), also has excellent resources to expand your horizons for Earth Month. Check out a few of the audiobooks available by clicking on the images below.

Are you a Planet Earth aficionado? Celebrate Earth Month with Sir David Attenborough, the stereotypical British narrative voice of nature documentaries, in a streaming documentary that celebrates his environmental advocacy. The Films on Demand database can be accessed off-campus using your Durham Tech username and password, the same you use to log into Canvas, Self-Service, and the beginning of your email.

As a reminder, Durham Tech's strategic plan includes sustainable environmental objectives as part of our Pathways to Institutional Excellence:

  • D.4 – Create green and sustainable campuses, minimizing the College’s carbon footprint, and engaging in campus beautification efforts that culturally reflect Durham and Orange counties’ communities.
