Read in Groups with the Durham Tech Library

Submitted by Durham Tech Library on

We may not be doing the Read Great Things Challenge this year, but you can still read with the Durham Tech Library.

Did you know that you can use our book club sets to make your own book club?

Durham Tech Book Clubs & Reading Circles Selections

Organizational Development and Learning Selections are for faculty and staff use only and require permission for borrowing. All the other books on the guide are available.

How do you start your own reading group?

It can be pretty simple-- gather your readers, pick a book, and coordinate checkout by emailing Meredith Lewis (lewisma @ durhamtech.edu) or the Durham Tech Library (library @ durhamtech.edu).

Who can be in your reading group? Your department, your work friends, your school friends, interested people in your program, your club--anyone! Reading group copies only check out to current Durham Tech faculty, staff, and students, so while you may have folks outside Durham Tech in your reading group, they'll need to borrow one of our circulating copies or get their own copy from their local public library.

We have about 7 copies of each book, so if everyone needs a copy, there's your possible limit. We also have some audiobooks or ebooks available through Dogwood Digital Library(link is external)--the NC Community College shared virtual library (available through the Libby app or on your browser).

Reading group books check out for up to 8 weeks.

Are you Durham Tech faculty or staff and want to join in on already-in-progress reading groups?

Faculty and Staff Reading Groups are in their third year and we read approximately 4 books per semester-- 2 nonfiction and 2 fiction or "other" selections. In the past, we've read and discussed All We Can Save, Braiding Sweetgrass, Fire Keeper's Daughter, Four Lost Cities, Gender Queer, The House in the Cerulean Sea, How Not to Drown in a Glass of Water, Making Numbers Count, Project Hail Mary, A Psalm for the Wild-Built, Thank You for Voting, The Violin Conspiracy, Visual Thinking, The War for Kindness, and You Look Like a Thing and I Love You.

This semester, we'll be reading Stolen Focus, Sourdough, Our Migrant Souls, and Promises of Gold/Promesas de Oro.

We've already set our meeting days and times for the semester and have started reading Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention and How to Think Deeply Again by Johann Hari(link is external). Want to join in or read along even if you can't attend meetings? Reach out to Meredith Lewis (lewisma @ durhamtech.edu) and you'll be added to the Teams group to join in the discussion.
