Library Benefits from Middle Eastern Studies Grant

Submitted by Durham Tech Library on
Thanks to a grant that earmarked $3000 for library resources, the Durham Tech library expanded its collections of Middle East-related materials. The grant was funded by the Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies. Made possible by Consortium’s Title VI funding, the grant, locally administered by Shannon Hahn, allowed the library to add over 100 new titles to its collections. Here is a list of the titles the library purchased and here is the Middle Eastern Studies LibGuide. The library offers Arabic-English dictionaries, including a new one you can check out: Oxford Essential Arabic Dictionary is on the main campus library's lower level and you can borrow it for three weeks! The grant allowed the library to purchase quite a few novels, including classics like Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses and contemporary fiction, such as The Last Days of Café Leila, by Donia Bijan. There are also many nonfiction works among the grant purchases, ranging from art to current issues, history and personal memoir. Do you like movies? We bought 28 DVDs, including five documentaries and 23 feature films! Graphic novels? Yes, we have The Arab of the Future: A Childhood in the Middle East and The Arab of the Future 2. Do you cook? How about checking out Naomi Duguid's Taste of Persia: A Cook's Travels Through Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, and Kurdistan. Are you a world traveler? Be sure to see our growing list of titles in the Culture Smart series. All of these titles and more are available at your Durham Tech library. Check us out! *Edited 9/13/17 to clarify the source of Title VI funding and clarify Shannon Hahn's role in the grant.
