Have You Heard about the Read Great Things Challenge? And our SPRINT?
Did you know that the Durham Tech Library sponsors an annual reading challenge?
Click through to learn more about the Read Great Things 2021 Challenge AND to learn about our 2021 Reading Sprint (and what you can win for both).
The Read Great Things Challenge started in 2018 and is a category-based reading challenge, meaning each year we have 12 different categories, consisting of one category that counts as a free space (like in BINGO) and our very favorite category--A book suggested by your Durham Tech Library staff.
The other ten categories vary year-to-year [2018, 2019, 2020].
In order to "win" the Read Great Things Challenge, you need to finish reading books that fit into 10 of the 12 categories (and you can double dip-- one book can count for two categories) during the calendar year. Fill out the online completion form when you're all done.
We get together to give out bookish swag and have cookies and a book swap in December (well, not in 2020). Anyone is welcome to attend our end-of-year celebration.
No restrictions on type of book (format or genre) or page length, although we do have A short book as one of this year's categories (so I guess that's a restriction of sorts).
So...
You say there's an additional/alternate challenge this year?
Yup! If you're been busy, distracted, or just found out about the Read Great Things Challenge and aren't sure you'll be able to finish 5 strategically double-dipped books to fit our current categories, we're doing the Read Great Things 2021 SPRINT!
Finish 3 books between September 1, 2021 and December 31, 2021 that you're not also counting towards your Read Great Things 2021 Challenge (the bigger list) and that's it! You've won!
No double dipping here, just finishing 3 books in 4 months. (I believe in you!)
What do you win? Well, we've got some sweet buttons available in green, green, and orange that celebrate your victory. The books in the image are decorated with some very fast animals (a hummingbird, a cheetah, and a springbok).
Fill out the 2021 SPRINT completion form once you're done.
Need some category suggestions? Feel free to dig in our Read Great Things category backlist [2018, 2019, 2020] OR stretch yourself--
- Read a book in a format you don't usually read--ebook, audiobook, graphic novel, etc. Have you seen what we have in our Dogwood Digital Library collection? How about our Main Campus Graphic Novel Collection?
- Read a book in a genre you don't typically read. For my very specific fiction lovers, find something you're interested in slightly outside your wheelhouse. Nonfiction lovers, try sprinkling a little fiction in your reading. Novelist is a great place to browse books by categories, genres, and appeal terms (things we liked about certain books/stories).
- Read a book dealing with a historical event that you've recently realized you don't know as much as you'd like to (either fiction or nonfiction). There's a lot going on in the world and many opportunities to learn more.
Or just read whatever you want.
While your SPRINT books don't count towards your Read Great Things 2021 Challenge completion, you can definitely complete both challenges. Or just one. Or neither. Either way, you're still welcome to come join us in December for our bookish celebration.
