Developmental Education Changes: Frequently Asked Questions

What changes are being made to developmental education courses?

The current set of Developmental Education courses (ENG 002, ENG 011, MAT 003, MAT 010, MAT 021, MAT 043, MAT 052, and MAT 071) are being replaced by new courses:

  • ENG 025, MAT 025, and MAT 035 will be prerequisites.
  • ENG 045 and MAT 045 will be corequisites.
Corequisite versions of MAT 045 are:
    • MAT 045A is the corequisite course for MAT 121
    • MAT 045Q is the corequisite course for MAT 143
    • MAT 045S is the corequisite course for MAT 152
    • MAT 045P is the corequisite course for MAT 171

These changes will be in effect starting Fall 2025.

Are MAT 003 and ENG 002 going away? What if I was supposed to take them?

Yes, the new prerequisites (ENG 025, MAT 025, and MAT 035) will replace ENG 002 and MAT 003. If you have already taken ENG 002 and/or MAT 003 and need to take them again, see the chart below to determine placement or simply talk to your advisor.

How are students placed into developmental education courses?
  • If your high school GPA is at least 2.8, you place out of developmental courses.
  • If your GPA is between 2.2 and 2.8, you may need to take a corequisite course.
  • If your GPA is below 2.2, you’ll take ENG 025 and either MAT 025 or MAT 035.

Other placement methods, like SAT/ACT scores or college credits, can also apply. For more details, talk to your advisor.

Are financial aid and online options available for the new courses?
  • Financial aid covers developmental courses if required.
  • Most MAT 025, 035, and 045 courses will be in-person, with limited online options.
  • ENG 025 and ENG 045 will offer both online and hybrid formats, as well as in-person options.

Will the new courses be offered in 8 weeks or 16 weeks?
  • Prerequisite classes (ENG 025, MAT 025, MAT 035) will mostly be offered in an 8-week format.
  • Corequisite classes (ENG 045, MAT 045) will mostly be offered in a 16-week format. There will potentially be a small number of exceptions.

Can I take a corequisite course even if it’s not required for me?

Yes, you can register for a corequisite course even if it’s not required, but it won’t be covered by financial aid.

What if my GPA is less than 2.2? Which math course should I take?
  • For MAT 110, no prerequisite is needed.
  • For MAT 121 or MAT 171, take MAT 035.
  • For MAT 143 or MAT 152, take MAT 025.
  • For a combination of MAT 143/152 and MAT 121/171, take MAT 035.

After completing the new prerequisites, can I go straight into 100-level courses, or do I need a corequisite?

Once you complete the prerequisites (ENG 025, MAT 025, MAT 035), you can go straight into 100-level courses without needing a corequisite.

Can I take an 8-week gateway class (like ENG 111 or MAT 143) and a 16-week co-requisite course (like ENG 045)?

No, the co-requisite course must have the same start and end dates as the gateway class.
