Massage Therapy (Continuing Education)

Short Term

This course is designed to prepare students for both state and national massage therapy licensing exams through classwork and practical, hands-on training. Students will obtain a foundation for practice as an entry-level professional massage therapist. Topics will include education, anatomy and physiology, pathology, kinesiology, communication, client evaluation, technique, pain relief, stress management, professional standards and practice management. Textbooks included.

Students must complete the Massage Therapy Interest form.

Students must also attend an information session (see dates and times below). At the information session, they must show proof they are 18 years of age or older and provide proof of high school graduation with either a high school diploma (copy), high school equivalency (copy of diploma), or a college transcript (official or unofficial). Financial aid options will also be discussed.

The registration deadline is 2 weeks prior to the class start date.  

Uniform requirements

The required uniform is black scrub pants, a Port Authority polo shirt in purple, and black, non-slip shoes.

Licensure

Upon successful completion of the course, Durham Tech students are eligible to take the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam and apply for Licensure in North Carolina.

Candidates must pass both a content examination and a jurisprudence examination. Examination instructions state that in-state graduates must take the Massage Board Licensing Examination (MBLEx).

The MBLEx is administered by the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB). It is a multiple-choice examination, delivered via computer. Candidates can register online or submit their materials by mail. They should be prepared to remit a $265 fee. Approved candidates can schedule testing sessions through Pearson VUE; examinations are offered at testing sites around the nation.

North Carolina massage and bodywork licensure are governed by statutes, rules, and guidelines. View more information at the North Carolina Board of Massage & Bodywork Therapy web site. Individuals can verify information by contacting the Board.

Massage Therapy Clinic

The Massage Therapy Clinic is staffed by Durham Tech Massage Therapy students as part of their required course hours. The Massage Therapy Clinic is open to the public for full body massages at a reduced cost and students complete 100 percent of the work.

Financial Aid

Durham Tech has teamed up with NelNet to provide a tuition payment plan. This course also qualifies for financial assistance. The ConnectFunds grant deadline is 10 days prior to the class start date.

MTH-3021A Massage Therapy I

Massage Therapy I is the first of two courses in the Massage Therapy program and is designed to introduce students to anatomy and physiology, ethics, pathology, kinesiology, pain relief, and stress management for massage therapy. Students will learn basic massage therapy skills and bodywork techniques. Upon completion, students should be able to apply basic Swedish massage therapy skills. Completion of both courses in the program will prepare students for both state and national massage therapy licensing exams through classwork and practical, hands-on training. Textbooks included. Prerequisites: 1) Proof of age as 18 years or older; AND 2) Proof of a high school diploma (copy of diploma), GED (copy of diploma), or college transcript (official or unofficial). The registration deadline is 5 days prior to the class start date. Students must submit proof of prerequisites prior to registration.

MTH-3021B Massage Therapy II

Massage Therapy II is the second of two courses in the Massage Therapy program and is designed to offer advanced knowledge, skills, and hands-on techniques in a variety of clinical settings. Students will continue with anatomy and physiology, ethics, pathology, kinesiology, pain relief, and stress management. Additional topics will include business management, aromatherapy, pain relief, MBLEX prep, and work experience in the massage clinic. Upon completion, students should be able to perform entry-level therapeutic massage on various populations. Completion of both courses in the program will prepare students for both state and national massage therapy licensing exams through classwork and practical, hands-on training. Students must successfully complete Massage Therapy I to be eligible to enroll in Massage Therapy II.

This course is designed to help individuals who have already completed a massage therapy course of study prepare to take the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLEx). This course is open to graduates of any massage program from any state in order to help prepare you for the national exam. Topics will include all of the required content areas on the MBLEx.
