2013 Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) Fall National Leadership Conference

Anaheim is one of the country’s most populous metropolitan areas — a place well suited for over 1,800 future business leaders who ignite innovation.

Future Business Leaders of America Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL), the largest and oldest student business organization, held their National Leadership Conference (NLC) at the Hilton Anaheim, June 22 – 25. Conference participants from around the country and the world were in attendance for the NLC and the FBLA-PBL Institute for Leaders.

Paul Pacheco from Durham Technical Community College received national recognition at the PBL Awards of Excellence on June 25. Pacheco competed in Cyber Security and brought home a 2nd place award. With the increased use of the Internet for browsing, researching, information gathering, and e-commerce, information and cyber security has become a growing concern for businesses throughout our global economy. The Cyber Security event recognizes PBL members who understand security needs for technology

The award was part of a comprehensive competitive events program sponsored by FBLA PBL. Individuals, state teams, and local chapters were encouraged to compete in any of the over 50 different events representing a wide range of activities and the business and leadership development focus of FBLA-PBL. The winners of these highly competitive and prestigious awards were selected from among FBLA-PBL’s membership of 250,000 students and advisers and represent some of the best and brightest of today’s youth.

Also attending the conference was Durham Tech PBL member, Joe Joines, and advisers, Michele Parrish and Charlene West.  They all attended various workshops on topics like leadership, innovation and team building.

Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda Inc.is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) education association with a quarter million members and advisers in 12,000 chartered middle school, high school, and college chapters worldwide. Its mission is to bring business and education together in a positive working relationship through innovative leadership and career development programs. The association is headquartered in Reston, Virginia, just outside Washington, DC.

Leadership Conference photoDurham Tech students Lisa Carr, Hugh Jones, and Paeder Wall attended the Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) National Leadership Conference held in San Antonio, Texas, June 24 – 27. Attendees from across the United States and two countries were at the conference to sharpen their core business skills, expand their networks, and participate in more than 55 business and business-related competitive events. FBLA-PBL is the nation’s largest and oldest student business organization.

Jones and Wall were awarded first place in Network Design, which tested the competitors’ ability to evaluate the needs of an organization and then to design and implement network solutions.

Both also competed in Networking Concepts, in which Wall received first place and Jones received fourth place honors. Networking Concepts provides recognition for PBL members who have an understanding of network technologies.

PBL chapter advisers Michele Parrish, instructor in Information Systems Security/Networking Technologies, and Charlene West, assistant dean and department head, Business, Education, and Information Technologies, accompanied the students to the conference. According to Parrish and West, student Jones has landed a job as a direct result of his success at the conference.
