Biotechnology BioPharma class

Biotechnology is an exciting and expanding field. The  program’s goals are to provide practical, “hands-on” learning and familiarity with cutting edge techniques, technologies, and equipment. Position yourself to start a rewarding career in the Biotechnology industry. Students learn the basic skills required to become trained process technicians and lab assistants for biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemical companies. Through classroom instruction and laboratory work, students are prepared to enter the workforce and learn company operations and tasks.

Introduction to Bio Careers
(Free to qualified participants)

Interested in biotechnology but afraid you don’t have the academic skills or training to take BioWork or biotechnology training programs? Enter our Introduction to Bio Careers, a course combining basic math and science training, along with career readiness and technical skills development needed to pursue further training in one of the fastest growing industries in the state! To register, use the Continuing Education registration form and, if appropriate, the HRD Tuition and Fee Waiver Verification form. There is an additional $5 materials fee that will be collected on the first day of class. GMP and SOP

This course consists of six modules. Module one, GMP Orientation/Refresher; Module two, Deliberate Documentation, Module three, Conducting Investigations; Module four, QC (Quality Control) Laboratory Operations; Module five, SOP in a Regulated Environment; and Module six, Effective SOP Writing. Upon completion, students will be able to apply these GMP practices in FDA-regulated industries. 24 hours $84

Prerequisites for BioWork and BioPharma 1:
Prerequisites:

  1. Must be 18 years of age or older;
  2. Must have a high school diploma or GED;
  3. Must demonstrate appropriate COMPASS level reading (54) and math (47) for Biopharma I and
    math (27) for BioWork. Placement tests are offered by the DTCC Placement Testing Center; or
  4. Must provide a copy of a transcript of completed college degree (two-year or above).

BioManufacturing
BioWork

The BioWork course trains process technicians for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and chemical manufacturing. This introductory course brings together the basics of manufacturing technology, the fundamentals of science, and the job-seeking essentials needed to provide marketable skills for manufacturing technicians in the biotechnology field. 140 hours. $264 For more information, visit BioWork Certificate Frequently Asked Questions.

Aseptic Manufacturing Certificate (Level I)

This certificate training course prepares individuals to work as process technicians in aseptic pharmaceutical, biomanufacturing, and chemical manufacturing environments. Course topics include Gowning for Aseptic Environments, Gowning, Cleanroom Cleaning and Environmental Monitoring. Teamwork, problem solving, and situational applications are incorporated. Prerequisite: BioWork Certificate. 48 hours. $130

BioPharma 1: Bioscience Lab Techniques

This hands-on introductory course prepares students to perform functions usually expected in a laboratory setting. Students acquire basic knowledge and operational skills for scientific equipment, sterilization of glassware, and general housekeeping duties required in a lab. Students become proficient in operating, calibrating, and maintaining instruments commonly used in the lab. In addition, they learn to calculate molarity, % solutions, and serial dilutions. Students also develop proficiency in performing sterile techniques. Textbook and lab manual required. 100 hours. $200

BioPharma 2: Molecular Biology Techniques

This course is a combination of lectures and hands-on laboratories in molecular biology and recombinant DNA techniques. Students learn handson laboratory techniques found in most molecular biology laboratories. Topics included are DNA and RNA structure, media preparation, restriction enzymes, growth of bacteria, replication, transcription, and translation. The course also covers the use of plasmids and vectors, agarose gel electrophoresis, PCR, Southern and Western blotting, isolation of DNA, and digestion and analysis of DNA. Prerequisite: BioPharma 1: Basic Laboratory Skills certificate or college-level Bioscience courses. 148 hours. $275

BioPharma 3: Animal Cell Culture Techniques

This course provides students with a sound practical and theoretical knowledge of key techniques required to successfully initiate and maintain animal cell culture. Topics include aseptic techniques, growth environment, routine maintenance of cell cultures, cryopreservation, transfection, and cell counting. Other topics include cloning techniques, suspension culture, serum-free culture, evaluation of cryopreserved cells, extraction of DNA from mammalian cells, and use of multi-well plates in cell culture. Upon completion, students demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to grow, maintain, and manipulate cells in culture. Prerequisite: BioPharma 1: Basic Laboratory Skills certificate or college-level Biology and Chemistry courses.152 hours. $275
