What is the purpose of the Student Senate?
The purpose of the Student Senate is to coordinate and regulate activities and issues of concern to the community college student. The Student Senate represents our students' voice as the official student government association on campus. The Senate meets monthly to discuss campus concerns, regulate campus activities, review or create procedures involving student organizations and activities, and respond to campus regulations that affect the student body as a whole.

How can joining the Student Senate help you?

Numerous past Student Senators have won statewide and national awards and served in key leadership roles in statewide organizations. Many have attended the Student Leadership Institute, a week-long intensive leadership program which the North Carolina Community College System sponsors. Student Senators gain skills they can use in classrooms, in their homes, and in their communities.

Christine Wright"I became involved when a friend asked me to help out with a promotional video for a new club. From then on, I just got involved with one club after another. Before I knew it, I became Senate president and have loved every minute of it. Being part of the Senate and serving as its president as has meant the world to me. I never thought I would be in this type of leadership role, especially while in college. To see both sides of issues, from both the students and faculty and staff, and to voice an opinion and see a result has been huge. I have learned a lot, and it has opened doors for my future I thought I would never have."
– Christine Wright, past Student Senate President, 2008-2009

"Hello and welcome to all new Senators. Your decision to join the Student Senate might be a pivotal one in your life if you choose to make it one. My time in the Senate has brought many joyous moments and memorable experiences that will last a lifetime. Through the Senate, I have built networks that extend far beyond what any classroom at Durham Tech can bring. More importantly, time on the Student Senate has taught me the importance of teamwork because sometimes you just can't do it all alone. Serving as the chairman of the Community Outreach Committee has allowed me and my team to accomplish great things and to leave behind a legacy of challenges and rewards. In addition, my résumé has never been stronger. Remember that everything in life is what we make of it. A challenge presented is a blessing earned; so spend your time well and make the most of your opportunity and of your Senate. You can make a difference and your voice counts far more than you might realize. Again, welcome and give it all you've got!"
– Christopher J. Harris, Community Outreach Chair

How can I join the Student Senate?

Senators are appointed in three different ways. The first method is by academic division appointment. Three student representatives are chosen by the appropriate deans in each of the following departments of the college: Adult High School; Arts, Sciences, and University Transfer; Business and Public Service Technologies; Health Technologies; and Industrial Technologies.

The second method is by club or organization appointment. Generally, the student club or organization selects a member to represent that organization on the Senate. This representative role is important, as it is required for clubs or organizations to receive funding for activities.

The third method is by Senate appointment. There are ten at-large positions available for potential senators. The Executive Board of the Student Senate selects the at-large senators. There are also three special student positions available. The advisors to the Student Senate select the senators representing special students.

To apply, download and print the Student Senate Recommendation Form and talk with the appropriate recommending person to nominate you for serving on the Senate. Once both of thes form has been completed and submitted to the Senate Advisor, you will be notified regarding your acceptance.
