Effective January 1, 2010, all applicants to Health Technologies programs must complete a "Self-Assessment of English Language Skills" form and submit this form to their advisor or the Admissions office. Students for whom United States English is not their primary language who are accepted and enroll in a Health Technologies program (that is, enter the sequence of program specific courses) must meet the English language requirements outlined below. |

Students must meet with their assigned advisor to begin this process. After completing the “Self-Assessment of English Skills” form, students should make arrangements to take the iBT version of the TOEFL. Practice questions, test information, dates and testing sites can be found at: www.toefl.com When applying for the exam, students should indicate that test results be sent to Durham Technical Community College, ID # DI 5172. Photocopies of TOEFL Score Reports will not be considered valid. TOEFL test scores are valid for up to three years.

Who must take the TOEFL iBT? |
|||
| All students for whom U.S. English is not their primary language who are enrolling in a Health Technologies program (Associate Degree Nursing, Clinical Trials Research Associate, Dental Laboratory Technology, Medical Assisting, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Opticianry, Pharmacy Technology, Practical Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, Surgical Technology) must take the TOEFL, iBT version. "Enrolling" means being accepted to the program and beginning the sequence of program specific courses. If you are uncertain as to whether you must take the TOEFL, please check with your advisor. |

When should I take the TOEFL ? |
|||
You should take the TOEFL iBT after you have completed any required developmental studies courses and before you begin your program's Plan of Study. You must achieve the required scores before you can be admitted to the program's core courses. |

Why do I have to meet these requirements with my English skills ? |
|||
| All health care workers (native speakers and non-native speakers alike) are expected to use clear communication skills. Students whose native language is not English are expected to demonstrate "near native" English language abilities. | |||

If you think you do not need to take the TOEFL, make an appointment to see the EFL Coordinator. She will consider your language skills through an individual interview. You can contact the EFL Coordinator by email, barclayg@durhamtech.edu, or phone 536-7200, ext. 8001. |
