Literature Research Guide

The purpose of this guide is to help identify print and electronic resources for literary criticism; biographical information for authors; bibliographies; and literary terminology, themes, and concepts. Please ask a librarian for help with any research needs.

Search Tip: To find biographical information or literary criticism, try a keyword search combining the author and a phrase, using the word "and."

Electronic Resources
Databases are for finding full-text magazine and journal articles and can be accessed from the library or off campus using a password. The library subscribes to web-based databases for student and faculty use. For questions about databases, contact a librarian for assistance.

Although the EBSCOhost databases are general in scope and cover a wide variety of disciplines, they do provide access to many literary journals and full-text articles.

To Access: Click on "Other" search from the NCLIVE menu. Select EBSCOhost. Select each of the databases that you would like to search, and then click enter.

Search Tip: To access only articles with full text, once inside the database search screen click the box that says "full text" under "Limit Your Results." Use keyword searching to combine authors, titles, and literary concepts, using the word(s) "and."

Includes general academic databases that also index literary journal and magazine articles, a newspaper database, and the Books In Print database, which features book information and reviews.

Internet Resources

Literature Web sites on the Internet will vary in quality and content. It is extremely important to evaluate Internet resources before using them for research purposes.

  • Determining the web page author, organization, or institution's credentials is essential to evaluating the site's validity and usefulness.
  • Noticing the currency of the information is important because information should be updated regularly.
  • Identifying support for the page's information is also critical. Locate citations or bibliographies to document the information.

Gale Group: Literary Index

A helpful online index for locating literary criticism in the Gale reference books located in the reference area of the library. Both Author and Title searches will indicate which volumes of the Gale books to use for information on particular authors or works. In order to save time looking in the various print indexes, this site will search to find which volumes to use.

Librarian's Index to the Internet: Literature and Books

This page offers an extensive collection of sites for literary research. A description is given for each site mentioned on the page. Topics include classical literature, folklore, literature by country, mythology, poetry, short stories, and many others.

PAL: Perspectives in American Literature

The scope of the site includes early American literature before 1700, continuing to the present, encompassing writers of various time periods and movements such as 19th century romanticism and the Harlem renaissance.

Yahoo! Links to Literature Sites

From the Yahoo! Directory, the literature resource page links to criticism and theory, periods and movements, poetry, etc and more.

Voice of the Shuttle English Literature Main Page

Links to web sites for medieval, renaissance, modern, and minority literatures, poetry, drama criticism, and theory, and more.
