  College Internet Access Policy

As a part of its mission, Durham Tech’s library strives to “provide access to varied materials, services, and equipment for students, faculty, and staff.” In keeping with this mission, the library is offering public access to electronic resources available on the Internet and the World Wide Web.

According to Durham Technical Community College’s Appropriate Use Policy for computing resources, Durham Tech’s computers must be used for “instruction, research, learning, and administration only. Durham Tech’s computers are for Durham Tech’s use. They may not be used for outside business projects or personal activities.”

Since the Internet is not subject to any regulation, it may provide information that is not accurate, complete, current, or legal. While the Internet contains a wealth of interesting and useful material, it also provides access to materials which some persons may find offensive or obscene. However, the Durham Tech library has no control over materials on the Internet and cannot be held responsible for its content. Also, monitoring a minor’s access to the Internet is the responsibility of that person’s parent or legal guardian.

Rules of Use:

  1. Internet access in the library must be for library-related learning, research, and information.
  2. No email or “chat-line” use.
  3. Internet access is limited to two hours per person each day, in 30-minute increments. Time may be limited by library staff if others are waiting.
  4. Use these resources in a reasonable, considerate manner. Remember that you are in a public place.
  5. Do not display text or graphics which may reasonably be construed as obscene.
  6. Respect the privacy of others.
  7. Do not alter hardware or software.
  8. Do not make copies of copyrighted or licensed software or data unless such use is authorized.

  Copyrighted Materials
Faculty and staff should exercise caution when reproducing copyrighted materials. Employees should be familiar with the Copyright Law (PL-553) which stipulates that permission of the copyright holder is required before systematic copying or taping of copyrighted materials. The copying or taping of copyrighted materials must meet tests of “spontaneity” and “brevity” as defined within the law.

The text of the law and guidelines for its application are available in the college’s library. Employees should review this material if they have any question about the legality or appropriateness of reproducing materials. Available information includes examples of letters to copyright owners requesting permission to reproduce their materials and guidelines for reproducing both print and audiovisual materials, computer software, or other copyrighted materials.
