Admissions Placement Testing

Important Information: All students must present a photo ID and Student ID Number before taking the test. Students must apply to the college first to receive a Student ID Number. For admission to Durham Tech, students must take the COMPASS placement test. Students may take the placement test a maximum of two times. Food and drinks are not allowed in the Testing Center. All cell phones must be turned off during testing. Children are not permitted in the Testing Center. All testing is on a first-come, first-served basis. Seating is limited; early arrival is advised

Please arrive 90 minutes prior to closing for all testing unless noted below. Each student will start the test on an individual basis, therefore some waiting may be required especially during the final days of testing each semester. All dates listesd are tentative and subject to change.

The COMPASS test is taken on the computer and assesses writing, reading, and basic math and algebra skills. There is no time limit for this test. Calculators are provided on the computer screen. Students may also bring their personal calculator.

testing photoThe Testing Center is located in the Phail Wynn, Jr. Student Services Center on the third floor in room 1302. The elevator is located in the main lobby of the building. The steps in the main lobby area reach the second floor only. Proceed to either end of the hall and use the stairs to access the third floor.

Special Accommodations: If special accommodations are required due to functional limitations from a disability, contact the Counseling office at 919-536-7207 or visit room 1309 in the Wynn Student Center for more information.

The Computer Competency Test is restricted to University Transfer, General Education, Spanish Certificates, Associate Degree Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Pharmacy Technology, and Respiratory Therapy majors only. The test focuses on basic computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel. The Computer Competency Test is offered during COMPASS hours only, requires 90 minutes to complete, and may only be taken once. Photo ID required.

The Measure of Academic Proficiency and Progress (MAPP) is an online assessment and is a new requirement for students applying for graduation from degree programs only. The data will be used to assess general learning outcomes for Durham Tech graduates. Graduation is NOT dependent upon a certain score. Student GPAs are also NOT affected by test scores. OFF-CAMPUS TESTING at the Northern Durham Center

Located at 2401 Snow Hill Road in northern Durham County
By appointment only. Call 919-536-7240 to schedule a testing appointment. If you cannot attend your scheduled appointment, please call 919-536-7240 to cancel the appointment. Photo ID required.

OFF-CAMPUS TESTING at the Orange County Campus

Located at 525 College Park Drive, Hillsborough, NC
Check the calendar for available dates and times at this site. Photo ID and student ID number required.
Requesting Test Scores:

The Testing Center issues Durham Technical Community College test scores only. Students must complete a Test Score release form (fill it out online, and then print and sign it), email sessomse@durhamtech.edu, or send a fax to 919-686-3669 with the request.

All requests must include:

  • The name or names under which you took the placement test;
  • Your student ID number or social security number;
  • Your Date of birth;
  • The approximate month and year you took the test;
  • Where the testing scores should be sent and/or contact information; and
  • Student signature.

Telephone requests are not accepted. All students must provide a photo ID to pick up test scores. Test scores cannot be picked up by another person unless the student has provided written permission.

Reviewing for COMPASS

To make your best possible score on COMPASS, review as much as possible before taking the test. "Chart Your Success on the Compass" is available for purchase in the Durham Tech bookstore and is also on reserve at the circulation desk of the Durham Tech library. Practice questions and review material can also be found on the following web sites:
