NEW! BioProcessing in the Workplace – $190

This training provides a more advanced understanding of bioprocessing and life industries. BioPharma 1: Basic Laboratory Skills – $85

This hands-on introductory course helps students learn how to perform functions normally expected in a laboratory setting. Students receive training on the operation and care of laboratory equipment, sterilization of glassware, and general housekeeping duties required in a lab. Upon completion, students are proficient in operating, calibrating, and maintaining instruments commonly used in the lab. In addition, they should be able to calculate molarity; serial dilutions; perform sterile techniques; and prepare various types of media, reagents, and buffers solutions. 98 hours. BioPharma 2: BioTechniques in Biotechnology – $105

This course is an introduction to molecular biology and recombinant DNA techniques and methods. Topics include media preparation, agarose gel electrophoresis, restriction enzymes, preparation of molar and % solutions, growth of bacteria, spectrophotometry, DNA and protein theory, Western blotting and Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). BioPharma 3: Cell Culture Techniques – $135

This course introduces the theory and practices required to successfully initiate and maintain animal cell culture. Topics include aseptic techniques, growth environment, routine maintenance of cell cultures, cryopreservation, cell counting, specialized culture techniques, and various applications. N.C. Heating/Mechanical Contractor’s License Renewal – $54

This course meets the requirements of the N.C. Board of Examiners of Plumbing, Heating, and Fire Sprinkler Contractors for six contact hours of continuing education credit. Three individual two-hour seminars covering the N.C. Mechanical Code with amendments are offered. Session I covers Chapters 1–5. Session II covers Chapters 6–10. Session III covers approved Fuel Gas Code Changes. Participants may attend only the seminars they need to satisfy individual requirements. The Code book is required. (Because this course is self-supporting, no tuition waivers or exemptions are allowed.) 6 hours.

Bartending/Mixology – $64

Become a bartender or become a better bartender. Gain mastery in drink mixing procedures and techniques, garnishing, recipes, product usage, sanitation, bar set-up, customer service, etiquette, résumé preparation, and ABC laws and regulations. Open to beginners and existing bartenders wanting to upgrade their skills. Job opportunities are discussed, and each participant compiles a recipe file. Appropriate tools are utilized; however, colored water is used in class. Applicants must be 21 years of age. 3" x 5" cards, and cardholder required. 30 hours.

American Sign Language, Beginning – $59

Emergency Medical Services
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic Training – $111.35
(Exempt for qualified participants*)

This course takes those with little or no medical experience and introduces them to emergency care. At the end of the course, students are competent in providing emergency care at the basic level to patients needing care. All classes require Saturdays. The schedule is provided on the first day of class. Requirements are 18 years of age or older and a high school diploma or equivalent. Registration is $69 unless exempt. A supply fee of $25, a CAPS fee of $4, and an insurance fee of $17.35 are required and are not exempt. Summer class includes nine Saturdays. Preregistration and textbooks required. Intermediate/Paramedic Refresher – $64
(Exempt for qualified participants*)

This refresher is for currently certified Intermediates and Paramedics and will cover the 48-hour refresher curriculum as prescribed by the National Registry of EMTs for the ALS level. This class will have a scope of practice sessions so it will also meet the requirements of NCOEMS as a refresher. Spanish Language Courses, Beginning Levels

Learn Spanish at Durham Technical Community College. The Continuing Education Division offers classes in four levels of Beginning Spanish. These levels become progressively more advanced, building on the skills learned from the prior course. Spanish I and II are designed for students with no or little previous exposure to the Spanish language. Spanish III and IV are more advanced and help better prepare you for the specialized or intermediate-level course. These courses allow you to gain the fundamentals necessary to pursue further Spanish study. Textbook required. Each class is 25 hours. 2.5 TRCs.

The curriculum is designed to teach the student how to use a computer keyboard and how to do basic document formatting in Microsoft Word. This course provides a stress-free introduction to the technology and computer skills you need in today’s business world. Learn to create letters and résumés and discover what computer terms mean. Build on your existing computer skills and learn more about business communications, use of email, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Clerical Assistant for Health Careers – $65
(FREE to qualified participants)

Develop the fundamental skills required to be effective in health care offices while exploring careers in the fast growing health care field from CNA, medical transcription, nursing, pharmacy tech, phlebotomy, to physical and occupational therapy, and beyond. Interviewing skills and résumé preparation guidance are included. Seats are limited to the first 14 participants. 60 hours.

Occupational Healthcare Careers
Basic Activity Professional Training for Health Care Facilities – $64

This course is designed to provide basic training to individuals desiring to become an activity professional in a health care-related setting. Activity directors for adult care homes are required by the N.C. Division of Facility Services to complete a minimum of 50 hours in an approved Activity Director course. Activity directors for nursing facilities are required to complete the 50-hour basic course with an additional minimum of 10 hours in documentation, including the assessment and care planning process. This approved course includes an overview of the activity profession, human development and the aging process, standards of practice, and methods of service delivery. Textbook required. 60 hours.

Personal Enrichment
Basic Upholstery – $59

This course covers the basics of furniture upholstery and is for those with basic sewing skills. Students learn about fabrics and how to cover chairs, cushions, footstools, and small sofas. Cost of materials depends on the chosen project. 27 hours.

Beginning Calligraphy – $59

Students learn the Italic style of calligraphy. This course is for the absolute beginner or those with previous experience seeking to refresh their skills. The only requirements are a desire to work in this medium and a calligraphy pen with three nibs. 16 hours.

Real Estate
Real Estate Broker Prelicense Course – $64

This is the course you need to take to enter the real estate profession. It is required for persons wanting to take the North Carolina real estate license examination and obtain a real estate broker license. This course may be offered only by schools and instructors approved by the N.C. Real Estate Commission. The primary objectives of this course are (1) to provide students with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to act as a licensed real estate broker in a manner that protects and serves the public interest and (2) to prepare students for the N.C. Real Estate license examination. Major topics include basic real estate property law, property taxation, land use controls, environmental hazards, brokerage relationships and practices, real estate contracts, real estate financing, closing real estate transactions, real estate valuation, fair housing, landlord and tenant, property management, federal income taxation of real estate, basic house construction, and property insurance. The N.C. Real Estate License Law and N.C. Real Estate Commission Rules and Trust Account Guidelines are also covered. Textbook required. 80 hours.
