Attend an orientation to learn more about the Brownfields Environmental Job Training Program, created in partnership with the City of Durham and the EPA. To support the city's ongoing efforts to engage the community in the redevelopment and revitalization strategies for the Pettigrew Street Corridor of NE Central Durham, a comprehensive program has been developed that will enable participants to effectively gain skills and training needed to competitively seek employment in the assessment, cleanup, and redevelopment of the NECD Brownfields sites. The program consists of an eight-week, 160-hour training cycle that will include training in HAZWOPER, field testing and equipment, lead worker awareness, and soil and water management for jobs with starting salaries of $11 – 13 per hour.
Participants must meet the following criteria:
• Be at least 18 years of age or older;
• Have a N.C. Driver's License or valid State I.D.;
• Be able and willing to lift 25 lbs. and perform tasks requiring physical labor;
• Have the ability to work in confined spaces;
• Have the ability to wear Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). Physicals will be required for SCBAs;
• Be able to pass drug screening;
• Ability to obtain Bronze level NC Career Readiness Certificate utilizing WorkKeys assessments from ACT™; and
• Have a HS diploma or GED (or be enrolled in GED or AHSD to participate in training).
The EPA application, approval, and funding process has been delayed with anticipated awards being announced early second quarter 2010. If awarded, the Durham Office of Economic and Workforce Development and DTCC will announce the new program schedule by June 2010.
