| After completing World View’s Global Education Leaders’ Program in summer 2008 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, President Bill Ingram initiated exciting steps to advance global education efforts at Durham Technical Community College. The college named globalization as one of their five strategic initiatives, and plans were finalized for a college-wide Center for the Global Learner. Unique in the state, the Center for the Global Learner (CGL) coordinates and develops a variety of ongoing efforts while providing dedicated leadership and a focal point for all international activities at Durham Tech. Programs such as English as a Second Language (ESL) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL), which were located in different units of the college, are now under the CGL umbrella. This consolidation along with international student admissions and services provides non-native English speakers with seamless advising and placement as they transition between programs. Until now, these students have had to navigate three or four different locations and meet with several different people before each step was completed. The CGL now coordinates this process. Benefits extend not only to international students, but to all students, faculty, staff, and the community. The CGL will work collaboratively with other departments on efforts such as globalizing the curriculum, intercultural programs and activities, study abroad, and professional development. The CGL will create strategic partnerships with business and industry, non-profit and governmental organizations, and academic institutions both in the U.S. and abroad. The CGL represents an important step forward in preparing students for the 21st century. While many community colleges offer a range of programs that are global in nature, the concept of a central administrative unit to promote, coordinate, and lead all globalization efforts in a collaborative way is unique to Durham Tech.
