ALUMNI CABINET
Callie Barrow
Callie started at Durham Tech as a dual enrolled high school student in the spring of 2004 when she was 16. Callie enjoyed her role as founding president of the Durham Tech chapter of the math honor society, Mu Alpha Theta. She graduated from Durham Tech with both Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees and transferred to the UNC School of Nursing program in 2006. Callie graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2008 and currently works as a nurse in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at UNC Hospitals.
T Clayton
T Clayton began her educational career at Durham Tech in 2002 and graduated from the Surgical Technology program in 2004. After working in the field, where she traveled twice to Uganda on humanitarian missions, she returned to Durham Tech and completed an Associate in Science degree through the University Transfer program in 2008. T is currently a senior pursing her Bachelor of Science in Mathematics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Barry Dark
Barry graduated from Durham Tech’s Opticianry program in 1976. He went on to operate a successful local business for over two decades. Upon retiring from the private sector, Barry sold his business and came back to Durham Tech where he currently teaches in the Opticianry program.
Lucy Edwards
Lucy completed Durham Tech’s Licensed Practical Nurse program in 1965 and went on to a very successful nursing career in UNC Hospitals. Lucy retired after 31 years of service and now spends her time with family, traveling, and enjoying arts and crafts activities. Lucy is excited to be a part of the inaugural Alumni Cabinet.
Betsy Futrell
Betsy graduated with an Associate in Arts from Durham Tech’s University Transfer program in 1992 and transferred to North Carolina State University where she graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Statistics. Betsy currently works as a Web Strategy and Design Specialist at SAS, which is ranked first on FORTUNE magazine’s 2010 “100 Best Companies to Work For.”
Jamie Futrell
Jamie graduated with an Associate in Arts degree from Durham Tech’s University Transfer program in 2001 and transferred to North Carolina State University where he graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. Jamie brings his extensive knowledge of social media marketing and public relations to the Alumni Cabinet.
Sheriff Worth Hill
Sheriff Hill has Associate of Applied Science degrees in Police Science and in Fire Science from Durham Tech. He served in the Durham Police Department where he retired at the rank of major in 1988. He is also a graduate of the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Sheriff Hill has been a law enforcement officer for over 45 years and has served as the Durham County’s sheriff since 1994.
Rita Keating
Rita graduated from Durham Tech with a degree in Business Computer Programming in 1987. In 2001 Rita returned to Durham Tech to rework her technical skills with the Internet Technologies – now called Web Technologies – program. She is a web developer for Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy.
Nelson Kerr
Nelson graduated from Durham Tech with an Associate in Arts in Business Administration. He went on to graduate with honors from Shaw University in Business Management. Nelson is a past chairman of the Durham Martin Luther King Steering Committee. He currently works as a site manager with Ikon at Duke University.
Galen Maultsby – Secretary
Galen graduated from Durham Tech with an Associate in Science degree in 2006 and transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he majored in Mathematics. Galen is pursuing a Master’s degree in education at Carolina.
Rai Anne Miller – Public Information Officer/Historian
Rai Anne graduated from Durham Tech in 1994 with an Associate in Science, an Associate in Arts, and an Associate in General Education. While at Durham Tech, she served as the president of the Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society. Rai Anne retired from the U.S. Air Force after a 21-year career as a chief master sergeant and is currently employed at LORD Corporation, in Cary, NC, as a technologist in Mechanical Research and Technology.
Medina Musawwir
Medina received her Associate in Science in 2005 from Durham Tech and transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She graduated in 2008 from Carolina with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. Medina is currently employed by the Biomedical/Biotechnology Research Institute as a research assistant in the Neuroscience and Drug Abuse Department. She is completing a research project in the area of neurogenesis and, upon completion, will pursue a career in dentistry.
Channa Pickett – President
Channa attended Durham Tech in the University Transfer program from 2000 to 2002. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Science and Policy from Duke University in 2005. After working as an environmental scientist for a small consulting firm in Charlotte, NC, Channa returned to Durham in 2008 to work in Duke’s Office of Durham and Regional Affairs as the senior program coordinator for Community Outreach, Engagement, and Evaluation.
Lisa Pineiro
Lisa is a 2006 graduate of Durham Tech’s Small Business and Entrepreneurship program through Corporate and Continuing Education. Lisa owns and operates Technical Services Inc., which is ranked 20th in the top 100 small businesses of North Carolina. She has continued to take additional classes at the college to assist her in operating her Durham-based business. Lisa was recognized as Enterprising Women magazine’s National Enterprising Woman of the Year in 2008, and she was also recognized as the 2009 North Carolina Small Business Person of the Year.
Toni Rigsbee – Vice President
Toni attended the College Prep (Breaking Through) program in 2006. She is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice at North Carolina Central University.
Carlo Robustelli
Carlo enrolled in the University Transfer program at Durham Tech in 1999. He then transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Political Science in 2003. Upon graduating, he became the program director for the Parr Center for Ethics at Carolina and then served as chief of staff to Chapel Hill Mayor Kevin Foy. Carlo returned to Durham Tech in 2008 to serve as director of Orange County Operations.
Robert Russell
Robert began attending Durham Tech in 2002 and in 2004 was part of the first cohort of the Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program (C-STEP), an avenue for selected high-achieving Durham Tech students matriculating to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Romance Languages with a focus in Italian in 2006. Robert is excited with his new role as a member of the inaugural Durham Tech Alumni Cabinet.
Keith Spring
Keith graduated from the Durham Tech Architectural Drafting Technologies program in 1978 and earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1983 from North Carolina State University. Keith is the president of Spring Stoops McCullen Engineering, PA located in Durham.
Tina Webb – Treasurer
Tina received an Associate in Secretarial Executive from Durham Tech and went on to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration from North Carolina Central University. She has more than 30 years of experience in all aspects of the technology field. Tina also serves as an ordained deacon for her church.
